Commander Keen 4: Secret of the Oracle
Being able to run the game at all times during production is easier said than done. I worked on teams where we were only able to run the game on fridays. The remaining week, we used debug tools to work on one's part. On other projects, the team waited for milestones deliveries to play the game. That's every 2 months or so. But I also had the chance to work on projects with daily playable builds. And it is something else. They weren't always purged of bugs, but playable. It unlocks so many possibilities, it is the dream. Id software next game I knew what part of the video hardware Carmack had to use to create the side-scrolling effect, but he had figured out another optimization that reused background graphics so that the PC could read, render, and react with maximum efficiency. Remember that processing power and available memory were a fraction of what’s standard today. Carmack had created a rendering engine that rewrote the rules of the game, of all games, and yet he didn’t realize it. In fairness, nobody else did either.

The second quality is technically well grounded game design. id’s games feel deeply rooted in the id mindset, which includes a somewhat calculated, mathematically apt approach to game design. Like a well balanced equation, id’s games feel finely measured, with every piece justified. The mechanics all lock into place with tightness, the variation, balancing and types of enemies all play to strengths and weaknesses fixed by the weapon selection. The labrynth styled levels almost play out to a well designed algorithm with increasing complexity. This initial emphasis on mathematical design, has grown into something of a trademark style for the company. Tom Hall was the main workhorse behind Commander Keen's design, even going so far as to model the main character, Billy Blaze, after himself as a child. With the use of Cormack's workaround for a scrolling background, they decided to make the gameplay somewhat like that of Mario Bros., but with features that would set it apart from other games of its type. With open exploration, a ray gun, and his handy-dandy pogo stick, Billy Blaze was definitely outside the vein of the usual platform game. The first thing that needs to be known is that the most disappointing isn’t the worst. These are games that were greatly hyped and had so much promised, but in the end, didn’t deliver any of it. These games are playable, but barely enjoyable, but also not really terrible either. There weren’t too many disappointing games this year, but the ones that were really made an impact this year.
